I recently got a new puppy and this reminded me to inspect my yard for hazards. Even though I employ a landscaping company that mows, trims and edges and am under contract with a lawn service company that fertilizes, and manages pest control, neither of those companies (as with most companies) they don't look for or treat fire ants, they're more in and out quick services who are servicing hundreds of homes a week. This leaves the obligation to us, as dog owners.
Dog fire ant bites: fire ants are particularly aggressive ants. They are typically found in large groups and they tend to attack easily. The inquisitive nature of dogs makes them prone to fire ant bites. The ants will typically bite the nose, feet, legs and toes. Reactions to the bites may vary from mild to severe. Have your dog see a vet immediately should him/her appear to have difficulty breathing, agitation, drooling, scratching face, vomiting, diarrhea or seizures it is best to take him/her to the closest emergency center and treat for anaphylactic shock.
I found 2 problem areas in my yard, amongst the landscaping that surrounds the pool, not an area I would typically be walking in, but for this new puppy. I removed the ants, applied bait, mixed into the soil to reduce the chance of dog(s) would ingest it, and removed old mulch, reapplying new mulch. The area not only looks better, but I can feel safer about having my pup run through the area chasing lizards and geckos. Take a few moments today to scan your yard, keep our little guys safe and happy. They'll love it and your wallet will love it because you aren't likely to be running to the vet for emergency treatment if a large unsuspecting mound of fire ants is discovered by your curious dog who innocently bites off more than he/she can chew!

Fire ant bites cause most dogs to feel pain upon being bit and then they typical cause a lot of itchiness. The dog will lick and bite the area further aggravating it.
