TO BE SAFE, protect your pets. Mosquito control is the best defense at this time against Zika virus. Unfortunately for us, Aedes mosquitoes are incredibly tough customers. They are aggressive daytime feeders and prefer people over most animals and thrive indoors or outside. The eggs of Aedes can survive dry, cold conditions for over a year and hatch into larvae as soon as they contact water. Therefore, especially with the Wet Rainy Season upon us, remove any standing water from flower pots, bowls or buckets around your yard to help eliminate mosquito breeding areas. The most effective natural mosquito repellent at the time of writing is Repel Lemon Eucalyptus. While Repel Lemon Eucalyptus is specifically for human use, there are many versions available for pets. One product can be used by putting the oil in a special holder on your dog’s collar. That way, the oil never directly touches your pet. There also is a version available for felines to help protect your cat from mosquitoes. NEVER use DEET on your pets. NEVER, it is TOXIC.
And remember, Zika isn’t our only worry when it comes to those pesky mosquitoes, they also can carry harmful parasites and other diseases. So talk to your VET about products such as K9 Advantix II, and other topical treatments you can easily obtain to keep your best friend safe and happy this Summer.
