How Xylitol Can Harm Your Dog
The effects of Xylitol on your dog are immediate and can be very severe. Signs of toxicity can be seen in as few as 30 minutes. Ingestion of any small amounts of the product will cause the rapid release of insulin in dogs and result in hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia results in vomiting, weakness, and sometimes seizures. In some cases, Xylitol poisoning can result in liver failure. Why do I call your attention to this? Valentine's Day is upon us very soon and some of you will be buying treats for your fur-friend, and others will take to the kitchen to make homemade doggie treats, often choosing that option as a "healthy alternative" to store bought pre-packaged treats. However, be reminded to check the labels especially of peanut butter products. If possible always choose raw, unsalted peanut butter. There are also very good dog-friendly brands: Example: Entirely Pets has a Dogsbutter, and even more spectacular for every jar purchased they donate a jar to animals in need at shelters nationwide.
This Valentine's Day make sure any sweet treat you bake or purchase for your dog is safe. These little guys are always there for us, they never let us down, their heart truly belongs to us each and every day of the year, not just on February 14th. I know my dogs are ever special to me. They have helped me through some really tough times in my life. Because of that, I know I owe them big time, and one small thing I can do is to keep their food sources safe and healthy.
